The GrandCare system starts with an easy to use touchscreen computer, typically in the kitchen of a loved one who requires some extra care at home. With the patient firmly at the center, the system integrates four components: Wellness, Activity Monitoring, Smart Home, and Social Connectivity. Let’s start with Wellness. The system accepts readings from wireless devices including: weight scale blood pressure cuff thermometer glucometer pulse oximeter Each of these devices produces charts or graphs and support simple rulesets to alert caregivers whenever there are abnormal readings. The wellness component can also provide medication compliance through the use of reminders or by interfacing with the RxTender pill dispenser. Self assessment questionnaires completed by the loved one offer the caregiver even more information about how the person is feeling. The second component is Activity Monitoring. Keep track of basic activity in the residence through the use of motion and temperature sensors, door sensors, chair sensors, and bed sensors. When combined with customized rules, you can have the system text you if Mom doesn’t get up in the morning or have the neighbor called if Grandpa leaves the house in the middle of the night. The third component includes Smart Home devices which can control or monitor lights, thermostats, and cooking appliances. The system can detect someone getting up and night and will light the way to the bathroom to reduce the risk of falls. The fourth and final component is Social Connectivity – A large touchscreen with one button skype, email, reminders, pictures, games, and brain exercises. It’s the glue that makes the system meaningful and useful. The GrandCare system can help provide peace of mind in the caring of loved ones for a cost of less than one to two months of assisted living.
